Sizing is one of the largest operational risks in a bulk children’s uniform order. Age labels and height labels are useful starting points, but they do not replace garment measurements. A purchasing team needs a consistent measurement method, an approved fit sample and a size ratio based on actual student or sales data.
Understand What Size Numbers Mean
Numbers such as 100, 110 or 120 often relate broadly to a child’s height range, but the garment dimensions can vary by brand, country and fit preference. The same marked size may be slim, regular or relaxed depending on the pattern.
Treat the size label as a name and the measurement chart as the technical standard. Confirm the exact chart before placing the order.
Measure the Garment Consistently
For shirts, common points include body length, chest width or circumference, shoulder width and sleeve length. The measurement method must state whether the garment is laid flat, where the tape begins and whether the value is half chest or full circumference.
For skirts and trousers, include waist, hip where relevant, garment length and any adjustable feature. Use simple measurement diagrams to reduce interpretation errors.
Develop Sizes 100–180 Carefully
A broad 100–180 range covers substantial changes in body shape and garment proportion. Grading should not simply add the same amount to every measurement. Collar, shoulder, armhole, sleeve and length must remain balanced across the range.
For sizes not represented by an existing approved pattern, confirm a graded specification or additional sample before committing to high quantities.
Plan the Size Ratio From Evidence
Do not divide the order equally across all sizes unless your sales or enrolment data supports that choice. Review past sales, student measurements, school age distribution and expected replenishment.
Keep a sensible reserve for common sizes, but avoid relying on intuition alone. The wrong ratio can leave a buyer with shortages in popular sizes and excess stock in slow sizes.
Allow Tolerance Without Losing Control
Garments are sewn products, so a reasonable measurement tolerance is normally stated. The tolerance should be agreed by measurement point and checked using the same method on both sides.
A tolerance is not a substitute for accurate patterns or production control. Repeated measurements outside the agreed range should be investigated before shipment.
Approve Fit Before Bulk Cutting
Review the fit sample on an appropriate model or mannequin when possible. Check movement, collar comfort, sleeve opening, shirt length and how the shirt works with shorts, trousers or a pleated skirt.
After approval, keep the signed chart and sample as production references. This is especially important for private-label ranges with their own fit identity.
